Yuletta McDonald Mitchell Scholarship

Calvin Coolidge Senior High School
Washington, DC
"Class of 1965"

On the morning of October 9th, 2010, Yuletta McDonald Mitchell, Captain of the cheer leading squad our senior year, was lost to us as the result of a massive heart attack suffered at our alumni association's Annual Breakfast.  Yuletta was being honored as an Alumni Award Recipient and had been greeting classmates, posing for pictures, and simply being Yuletta.  There were absolutely no signs of any problem as Yuletta appeared radiant and full of life.  Though we have lost a number of our classmates, all of whom will always be treasured, Yuletta's death was especially sobering, for Yuletta had not been ill and was the picture of health; the picture at left was taken just minutes before her crisis.  It just so happened that our 45 Year Reunion was held that evening at the same location.  This truly put an exclamation mark on the the day's events.  As a result, I think we all took note of our own individual mortality.

Yuletta is remembered as a smart, gregarious, energetic, and take-charge individual, all traits we admire in a person.  Her death had a profound impact on all who knew her.  It also moved us to search for an appropriate way to honor her memory.  This class scholarship fund is the result of that search.  Through this fund, a scholarship will be awarded in Yuletta's name each year to a Calvin Coolidge High School graduating senior that satisfies the fund's criteria.  We ask that classmates as well as anyone else  so moved generously contribute to assure that this effort can be sustained as long as possible.  Contributions should be mailed to the following:
